Westcroft JC have won this year's Millennium League in a very exciting finale to the competition. Pyrford their nearest rivals and last year's winners put in a very successful team for this round and nearly managed to make up the difference in points between the top two teams.

Help with Mats on Saturday 25th October 2003

Dear All

Many thanks to all who helped with the laying of mats at the last competition.
As time passes so quick it is again time for me to ask for your help again.
The arrangements for this event will change due to there being a basketball match taking place at Westcroft on Saturday 25th evening.
Therefore timings will be as follows.
I hope as many of you as possible will be on hand to help out as we proved it last time "MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK"
Many thanks in advance for you support and help.

New website for the British Judo Association launched on the 8th September 2003

The BJA has a new website ! It is crammed full of information on judo, and well worth a visit. The big thing that has been missing on the web is a site with up to date news stories about the progress of our players at the World and International competitions, ... and now we have it !

The Great Gorilla Run

Email from Rebecca Guinea :-
Hi there, I wonder if you can help me?

I'm the Fundraising Manager at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (the international charity that works to save the worlds last remaining mountain gorillas) and I'm organising a massive charity road-run for Sunday 21st September 2003 BUT THIS IS NO ORDINARY ROAD RUN!

The Great Gorilla Run will have 650 people dressed in full gorilla costumes running 7km around the City of London. We'll provide all the costumes (which you can keep afterwards) and a run to remember, but what we need is RUNNERS!

We already have over 300 people signed up, but we really want to reach 650 so that each fur clad runner will represent one of the world's last remaining mountain gorillas (yep, there are just 650 left). And I wondered if you and your Judo pals could help us? Perhaps you could enter a team and compete with some of the other clubs taking part (You can always wear your Judo suits OVER your gorilla costumes to show which club you belong to).

Or perhaps you could include a piece about the run in the next edition of your newsletter or on your web site (I have some fantastic graphics that you could use - see attached) I'm sure there's a few gorilla lovers amongst your runners, and I promise that this will certainly be a fantastic day out.

You can find out all about the event on our web site....

Please do let me know if this is something that your club would be interested in, I'd love to get your feedback and look forward to your reply
Kindest Regards

Help with Mats - Usual Plea

Dear All

As is usual the time has come for my plea before the competition.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you help with the laying of mats at Westcroft Leisure Centre on Saturday 5th July at 8:30 pm or better still loading of mats onto van at Croydon Judo Club at 7:30 and then laying them out.
Also if possible to load and take back after the competition and grading on Sunday 6th.

If you personally cant make it please try to badger some other club members to come along and help out.

I'm getting bored and fed up at seeing the same few people doing all the work whilst others stand by and watch. I'm thinking of putting a rota together for all clubs to help out at the County events there are only 4 of them after all so 3 or 4 clubs sending 3 or 4 people to each event that way you would only be asked to help out once a year. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

Judo players wanted for the new series of the hit show Fort Boyard in July 2003

gif image of Fort Boyard title
We are looking for physically fit contestants to take part in the new series for Challenge TV, to be filmed in the last two weeks of July 2003. We would really like to have a Judo team on the show due to their high level of fitness and sense of adventure as the show is quite physical!

Fort Boyard has been described by the highly-regarded website as a “Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant superb show. Very few other shows match it in terms of style, excitement and cleverness”. Contestants must have the physical strength to endure tough tasks, the mental ability to solve riddles and the emotional strength to face your fears; but to make it that little bit nicer it all takes place in a real Napoleonic fort off the coast of Southwest of France! We will cover your travel and accommodation costs and you will need to be available for a three-day stay in France to allow for travel, briefing and filming.

We are looking for mixed teams of 5 to take part (3 men and 2 women), who are aged between 18 and 40, play regular sport and are up for the challenge! We would like you to apply with up to 10 potential team members (friends or colleagues) that can then be whittled down to 5 during our selection process.

If you are interested in taking part and think you can put together a team then we'd love to hear from you. Please call me on 0207 7734 3884 or e-mail if you would like application forms or further details.
See poster for details.

Best regards,
Ed Arriens

Harry Randall - Double Award winner

At the BJA Surrey AGM on May 11th, Harry Randall from Dorking Judo Club received the "Kenneth Bryant Award for Services to Judo".
This is a new award which was created at the bequest of Steve Jones in memory of his grandfather who died recently.
Most of you will know Steve Jones as our resident medic at Surrey Judo events. He was recently called-up due to the war in Iraq, and is stationed out in the Middle East. So it is quite poignant that Harry, an Ex-paratrooper who fought in the Middle East many years ago, should be the 1st winner of this award.

Surrey Girls at Brean Judo Training Camp

Last weekend in Brean Somerset, some of our Surrey Girls Squad enjoyed a judo camp training weekend run by Karen Briggs (4 times World Champion). Plenty of judo and fun was had by all. Many thanks to Sarah, Kat and Jo who were the 'responsible adults' for the trip, and made it all possible.

Junior Referees Courses

Sid Hearsey is intending to set up some Junior Referee Courses for later this year.
Unfortunately the BJA is changing the format for the referee courses and the details will not be known until May 2003.
Therefore it is not worthwhile arranging these until after then.
In the meantime, if you are interested in becoming a junior referee, or just would like to get a better understanding of what is involved, give Sid a call on 020 8660 6269 or email him your details (eg. name, address, club, grade, age.)
Also, keep an eye on the county website and newsletters for more information.

Steve Jones - off to Iraq

Steve Jones our resident medic at Surrey Judo competitions was pleased to see a few of us at the Millennium League on Sunday when he stopped by to say goodbye for now. He has been called up on stand-by due to the potential war in Iraq, but he can't say where he will be, not even if he will be hot or cold!!
If anyone would like to drop him a line or two he would be delighted to hear from them.
You can contact him by email at
or if that is not working then try snail mail;
CPL Jones SJK P2647382,

It is worth checking with the post office as some BFPO Post goes free.

Millennium League Round 1 2003

The 1st round was held at Westcroft Leisure Centre on Sunday 26th January 2003.
For the full results check out the Pyrford website ... soon.
Some clubs earned extra points in this round by supplying volunteer table officials.
A BIG thank you ... and 5 extra points, goes out to Paul Thompson and Chelsea Coomber from Sovereign, Kathie and Alan Clark from Westcroft, and Joe Williams from Wimbledon.
What a great way to earn 5 points for your club, and get the best seat in the house. See your coach for details on how to be a table official at the next round in July !

Westcroft Saturday 25th January 2003

Dear All

Your County Needs You !

Your County Needs You !

The county is always looking for more judo officials. Please send your details into us if you are interested in becoming a judo coach, table official or referee.
Remember that those people who train as a table official at the Millennium League this year will collect 5 points towards their club. Clubs can earn a maximum of 10 points this way per round. Those people training at all 3 rounds will earn an extra 5 points towards there club. That's a potential for a club to earn 40 points this year !

Southern Area Girls Squad Training

Mandy Humphrey (SA Female Team Manager) has arranged an extra squad training session especially for those who do not meet the grade/age requirments for the session at Crystal Palace on March 15th 2003.
This extra session is being held on Saturday 8th February 2003 at Gym 1, University College Campus, College Lane, Chichester, PO19 6TE Map
The session is from 10:00 to 11:30, with a mat fee of £3.
Please park in the top visitors car park and walk down. The gym is tucked away to the left as you head down to the entry to the campus.
Any female players are welcome to attend this additional session, so please encourage any other girls from your clubs to attend.
This is an ideal session for the less experienced players !

Surrey Boys & Girls Squad Training

There was a good turn out for the Surrey Squad training session held at Sovereign Judo Club in Reigate on Saturday January 11th 2003.
Graham Hoptroff (5th Dan) was assisted on the mat by Gary Coomber, Kat McDonald, and Graham Beagley.
Please note that these training sessions are open to any Surrey junior/youth players, and not just the Surrey Squad.
These squad training sessions are held regularly throughout Surrey and are a very good way for young players to practice with players from different clubs in a friendly atmosphere.
Keep an eye out on the events page of the website for details of the next one, or ask your club coach for details.
