Margaret McNaughton

It is with great sadness that the County announces the sudden passing of Margaret McNaughton last week. Margaret has been a stalwart of competitions over many years and has officiated at the highest level. Her funeral will take place on Thursday 11th March 2004 at 1.30 pm at the North East Surrey Crematorium, Lower Morden Lane, Croydon, SM4 4NL. All are welcome to attend. There is a request from the family that no flowers are sent but any donations are made out to the J.M. Amenity fund and forwarded to the committee who will pass them on. Our thoughts go out to Jean, Alex and Andrew

Guildford JC & Surrey Police JC

There have been several issues that recently have arisen at Guildford Judo Club which have placed them in jeopardy of folding after 38 years. Should this happen, no judo would be available in the area for juniors and as a County we would lose a permanent dojo. Personally, I feel very strongly that a long standing club such as Guildford should be given every opportunity to continue. After some discussions, agreement has been reached that the Surrey Police JC will move training venues to be based at the Guildford JC site.
This will take place from the 1st April 2004.
The SPJC will continue to train under its own name and on a Wednesday evening, just from a different site.
The benefits that result from this move are
  • more coaching staff and resources available to support both clubs
  • junior judo opportunities for the SPJC
  • a second senior session for Guildford JC
  • retaining a permanent dojo within the County
  • ensuring judo remains in the Guildford area for all levels
  • prevents Guildford JC from folding

Cliff Baker-Brown Trophy

On Saturday 31st January, Alan Rickard (6th Dan) President of Surrey County BJA and Vice Chairman of Southern Area, and Barry James (5th Dan) Chairman of the Southern Area took delight in being able to present Gordon Mortimer (7th Dan) with the "Spirit in Judo" Cliff Baker-Brown Trophy at the county's Xmas meal.
Gordon is President of Westcroft JC, and recently stood down as President of the Southern Area after several years service. The Southern Area wanted to recognise all the hard work and effort he had done on behalf of the sport of judo. Gordon has held other important positions within the BJA including Vice Chairman & Vice President, and Director of Refereeing, and was for several years an IJF 'A' referee.

New Rules for the Millennium League

IMPORTANT CHANGE OF ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR MILLENNIUM LEAGUE 2004.

AT A RECENT COUNTY COMMITTEE MEETING THE RULES GOVERNING THE MILLENNIUM LEAGUE WERE DISCUSSED. IT WAS FELT THAT THE MAIN AIM OF THE COMPETITION “JUDO DEVELOPMENT” WAS NOT WORKING AS EXPECTED.

IT WAS THEREFORE AGREED THAT THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO BE LOOKED AT, AS IT WAS APPARENT THAT SOME PLAYERS WERE NOT DEVELOPING, AS WE WOULD HAVE EXPECTED.

THE FOLLOWING WILL BECOME PART OF THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FROM 2004.

“ALL PLAYERS ENTERING THE MILLENNIUM LEAGUE MUST HAVE GRADED DURING THE PREVIOUS 12 MONTHS”

PLEASE ALSO BRING TO THE ATTENTION OF ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS THAT BY SIGNING THE ENTRY FORM THEY HAVE AGREED THAT PHOTOS/VIDEOS MAY BE TAKEN OF THEIR CHILD DURING CONTESTS AND MEDAL CEREMONIES.
(THIS IS NOW A REQUIREMENT UNDER THE BJA CHILD PROTECTION POLICY)

AS WITH 2003 ADDITIONAL POINTS CAN BE CLAIMED BY NEW VOLUNTEERS.
(VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED FOR TABLE WORK TIME KEEPING /SCORING AND MEDICAL (IF QUALIFIED)

5 POINTS PER PERSON PLUS BONUS 5 POINTS IF THEY ATTEND ALL THREE EVENTS. MAXIMUM OF TWO PEOPLE PER CLUB PER EVENT.
PLEASE REPORT TO EITHER GRAHAM BEAGLEY OR JOHN BUSHNELL AT THE START OF THE EVENTS
